Why do you Need to Collect your Certificate?

You might think your secondary school principal is your best friend until it is time to collect your WAEC SSCE certificate. When you delay in collecting your certificate and suddenly show up seven years later, your principal understands that the reason you came now is not friendship or nostalgia, but desperation, probably because a job, school admission, or official application has finally demanded the original certificate.

When you show up like that out of the blue, the school principal will charge you more.

For WAEC GCE certificates, the longer you delay in collecting your certificate, WAEC increases the collection fee. This is done to reduce the number of uncollected certificates piled up at the WAEC office and encourage students to come forward and collect their certificates earlier.

How to Collect your WAEC SSCE Certificate

After writing your WAEC SSCE exam, the certificate is usually released within 1-2 years. Visit your secondary school within this timeframe with a copy of your WAEC result. Go to either the principal’s or the bursar’s office and inform them that you want to collect your WAEC certificate.

They will check your WAEC result and confirm from their records if you were a student of the school, whether you owe the school money, and if WAEC has sent your certificate to them. If everything is in order, your WAEC certificate will be given to you.

Some schools may give the certificate for free, while others may request payment. Most of the time, you can bargain for the price.

There have been cases where students go to collect their results and find out that the school has closed down. This is one of the dangers of waiting too long to collect your WAEC certificate. In a situation like this, you can visit the WAEC office in the state where you did the exam to find out if the certificate was returned before closure.

If the certificate was not returned, you will be advised to get the WAEC digital certificate instead or get a statement of result issued by WAEC.

How to Collect the WAEC GCE Certificate

WAEC GCE certificates can only be collected at the state or zonal office of the West African Examination Council in the state where the exam was written. If you wrote your WAEC GCE exam in Akwa Ibom state, you cannot go to the WAEC office in Oyo state to collect your result.

Visit the WAEC state or zonal office with the following items;

1. An online printed copy of the WAEC GCE result.
2. Your passport photograph.
3. A means of identification (NIN slip is the most preferred).
4. Collection fee (where applicable).

How to Collect WAEC Digital Certificate

The WAEC digital certificate is a digital version of your WAEC certificate. It is available in PDF format upon download. This copy can be used in place of the hardcopy.

To get your WAEC digital certificate, visit the digital certificate platform to create an account.

Once you have created your account, log in and fill in your information on the front page. You need to enter the following information;

1. Examination year
2. Examination Number.
3. Exam type.
4. Date of birth (optional).

Tick the “I have verified the information above” box and click on “access certificate”.

You will be redirected to where you will make payment of ₦7,500 for the service.

Once payment is completed, you need to verify your identity by entering your phone number, house address and NIN.

Once this is verified, you will be able to view your WAEC certificate. Click on the download icon to download your result.

Tips for protecting your certificate

Scan and Store in Google Drive 

Always keep a scanned or PDF copy of your certificate in a cloud storage like Google Drive. If the hardcopy gets damaged or missing, you can refer back to the cloud storage to access your certificate.

Keep in a File Document

Laminating your WAEC certificate renders it void; instead, keep it in a file document to prevent wear, tear, and moisture damage while preserving the embossed seals and security holograms that prove its authenticity.

Always submit photocopies unless stated otherwise

Have multiple photocopies and a scanned copy of your WAEC certificate. This way, you can present the copies for initial screenings or upload the digital version for online applications while the original document is safely tucked away to avoid unnecessary handling.
